History of the Trust
The Desmond Tutu Educational Trust (DTET) is a non-governmental organisation that funds developmental programmes in tertiary education and provides capacity building at 17 historically disadvantaged institutions. Archbishop Desmond Tutu and ex-Vice Chancellor of the University of the Western Cape (UWC) Professor Jakes Gerwel established the Trust in 1990.

The Desmond Tutu Educational Trust aims to become a leading and innovative stakeholder in transforming tertiary education in South Africa.
Mission Statement
The Desmond Tutu Educational Trust focuses on improved access to quality education. In cooperation with higher education institutions, the DTET facilitates student academic development programmes that are geared primarily for historically disadvantaged students. The Desmond Tutu Educational Trust strives to uphold the fundamentals of the African Renaissance ideology and facilitates training and development projects that assist nation building.
