WORK STUDY PROGRAMME
At the beginning of 1990, the DTET — in conjunction with the University
of the Western Cape — pioneered the Work Study model, which has since
then become a programme that has benefited over 10,000 students
nationwide.
The programme provides finance for students’ fees but, unlike a bursary
or scholarship, it provides a meaningful work experience for students in a
supportive environment.
Programme description
- Students are placed in jobs that are related to their career paths.
- Selection is based on the student’s financial need.
- An amount not less than 50% of the student’s remuneration is paid
into the student’s fee account.
- Ongoing student training to impart work related skills is provided.
- The programme is centralised and well co-ordinated and is administered
by Work Study sub-commitees in collaboration with Financial Aid Offices
at the various institutions.
- The programme has a 50/50 gender balance.
